The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is extending the runway at Keshod Airport to 2,500 metres to enable operations of larger aircraft, such as the Airbus A320.
According to a media report, the airport’s development is being carried out at an estimated cost of ₹364 crore. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, shared the details in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday in response to questions raised by MP Parimal Nathwani regarding the airport’s expansion.
The runway extension alone is expected to cost ₹190.56 crore and is scheduled for completion by January 2027.
A new terminal building is also planned, with a budget of ₹142.17 crore. Covering 6,500 square metres, the terminal will be able to handle 400 arriving and 400 departing passengers during peak hours. The tender for its construction has been issued, with a completion timeline of 15 months from the date of work allocation.
MP Nathwani noted that upgrading Keshod Airport to handle larger aircraft would boost tourism by making it easier for wildlife enthusiasts to visit Gir National Park — home to the world’s only Asiatic lions. He added that it would also benefit devotees visiting the revered Somnath temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlings.
