Women have rated Ahmedabad as the safest city in India, followed by Indore and Mumbai, according to the She Shakti Suraksha Survey 2025, conducted by CNN-News18 in collaboration with P-Value. The survey, released ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, aims to assess women’s safety perceptions and identify key areas for improvement.
How safe do women feel?
The research covered 21 cities in its first year, with plans to expand to 100 cities in the future. Data was collected through Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) using a random sampling of 400 respondents per city, conducted in 10 different Indian languages.
82% of the 8,000 women surveyed feel safe in their city, while 6% feel unsafe, and 12% remain neutral. However, safety perceptions vary significantly between day and night:
- 82% of respondents feel safe during the day.
- Only 48% feel safe at night.
- 23% of women feel unsafe after dark, while 29% are neutral.
Public transport concerns
While Ahmedabad, Indore, and Mumbai ranked as the safest cities, the survey highlights concerns regarding public transport:
- 44% of women believe public transport is safe.
