Mumbai airport T1 to shut for renovation. 10 million flyers shift to Navi Mumbai

renovations are projecting the shut-down of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s (CSMIA) Terminal 1 this year.

Business News

It came out in a report that the terminal is going to be redeveloped to accommodate more passengers. To cover the gap created due to these renovations, CSMIA Terminal 2 and the newly built Navi Mumbai International Airport will be used.

In 2023, Terminal 1 of CSMIA, inaugurated by the Mumbai International Airport, is expected to be closed for major renovations. The plans for terminal renovations will start this year. Amendments will include closing down the structure that exists now.

It’s expected that the damage caused by day-to-day services will be limited, as the Navi Mumbai International Airport, alongside with Terminal 2 in Mumbai, needs to cover this gap which is expected to take place during the demolishing of Terminal 1.

After the redevelopment phase, the airport should have the ability to manage 20 million people annually, a figure that represents a 42% increase from its current capacity.

The authorities project that the airport will have this capacity by 2029, which is eight years from now. Phase II of the project involves building a new terminal in parallel with the completion of modernisation works to the existing terminal. The changes will be completed in three years’ time.

According to a press statement received, the construction of the modified Terminal 1 will coincide with the expansion of the current Passenger Terminal Building due to the impending rise in the number of domestic passengers utilising the airport.

A future merger with international operations is also possible. The upgrade phase of the terminal promises great enhancements to its infrastructure, including the implementation of landscaping for cooling, multipurpose substations, and an upgraded baggage handover system.
