In a remarkable feat at the closure of the Financial Year (FY) 2021-22, 50 per cent of alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) jointly contributed nearly Rs 50 lakh during the FY 2021-22 for various student and community welfare initiatives of the Institute.
Such monumental participation by young alumni of IITGN is a record of a kind because no other Indian educational institutions have ever been close to such a percentage by their alumni. It is also a record internationally.
Out of total 2749 alumni of IITGN, a total of 1375 alumni, i.e. 50 per cent of total alumni strength, collectively donated about Rs 47.50 lakh towards various welfare activities of the Institute, taking the average contribution to Rs 3453.
The average percentage of participation by IITGN alumni in the “Annual Alumni Giving” activity during the last two years (2020-21 and 2021-22) has been 52.5 per cent.
It is also important to note that unlike other institutions across the country and the world, the undergraduate and postgraduate alumni have been contributing equally.
This year, out of 1375 donor alumni, more than 700 of them are PG alumni.
With such generous philanthropic patronage by young alumni and various well-wishers of the Institute across the globe, IITGN has been able to support many current students and the larger community of the Institute in multiple ways, including providing laptop grants, scholarships, travel grants, financial assistance for medical/family emergencies, extending help for medical expenses, children’s education of various support staff and construction workers of the Institute, among others.
Over the last three years, IITGN Alumni have instituted 21 endowed scholarships, which provides one lakh per scholarship per year to students to foster excellence.
Sharing his thoughts and gratitude towards all alumni of IITGN, Prof Jaison Manjaly, Jasubhai Memorial Chair Professor and Professor-in-Charge, Alumni Relations, IITGN, said, “Such affection by our young alumni is heartening. They are creating records in alumni giving year after year. Their enthused engagement with the Institute has also encouraged many other IIT Alumni to donate to IITGN in a significant way. We are grateful to all of our alumni for their commitment and making us proud. It shows that the IIT Gandhinagar has significantly impacted their life.”
