Surat, which specialises in diamond-studded gold jewellery, is also making a name for itself in the silver industry. Diamond-studded silver jewellery from Surat is gaining popularity across continents, including the United States, Australia, Europe, and Hong Kong, resulting in more units opening in the city. At the moment, more than 50 companies in the city export silver jewellery worth Rs 4,000 crore.
Unlike gold, the diamond-studded silver jewellery made in Surat is lightweight. According to jewellers, the majority of silver jewellery is used as fashion ornaments and costs between $10 and $50.
The jewellery has minus 4 and melee size (very small) diamonds in them. Usually, the diamonds are in the range of 0.07 to 0.15 carat and the finished product is so well made that it often looks like white gold.
According to the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), from April to December 2021, silver jewellery worth Rs 14,612 crore was exported from India, with Surat accounting for more than 60% of the total.
Dinesh Navadia, regional chairman of GJPEC, told Mirror that the export of silver jewellery has been increasing over the last three years.
