Covid-19 cases in Gujarat scaled a new all-time high of 20,966 on Wednesday with Ahmedabad city accounting for nearly 40% of the cases.
The state’s tally of 20,966 cases was more than 22% higher than yesterday’s 17,119, which was the highest until now. As per the health department’s daily Covid-19 bulletin, 8,391 persons tested positive for Covid-19 in Ahmedabad city, the highest in a day yet.
The city also reported six Covid-19 deaths, the highest in a day in many months, and half of the state’s death toll.
Surat city reported 3,318 cases, followed by Vadodara city with 1,998, Rajkot city with 1,259, and Surat rural with 656 cases. Bhavnagar city reported 526 cases and Gandhinagar city 446. Valsad (387) and Bharuch (302) recorded more than 300 cases.
Valsad and Sabarkantha reported two deaths, while Surat city and Bharuch recorded one death. The 12 deaths reported today took the state’s cumulative Covid-19 fatality tally to 10,186.
The active caseload in the state jumped to 90,726 following the record high cases, while the number of patients who have recovered from Covid-19 went up by 9,828 to 8,76,166. The recovery rate dipped below 90% to 89.67%.
The cumulative vaccination coverage in the state neared 9.56 crore as 2.02 lakh vaccines were administered in the last 24 hours.
Earlier in the day, noted doctors, who are a part of the state’s Covid-19 Taskforce, appealed to citizens to adhere to Covid-appropriate behaviour to check the spread of the virus.
