Covid-19 cases in Gujarat decline for second straight day, but deaths jump

New Covid-19 cases declined for the second straight day in Gujarat on Saturday, even as Covid-related deaths jumped to a multi-month high.

The state reported 9,177 Covid-19 cases on Saturday, as against 10,019 persons who had tested positive yesterday, and 11,176 the previous day, according to the state health department’s daily Covid-19 bulletin.

Ahmedabad city recorded 2,621 cases as against 3,090 yesterday, while cases declined to 2,215 in Surat city from 2,986 a day earlier. New cases remained above 1,200 in Vadodara city for the second consecutive day at 1,211.

Rajkot city (438), Surat rural (282), Bhavnagar city (250), Gandhinagar city (218), and Valsad (201)  were the other places with more than 200 cases. Chhota Udepur recorded zero Covid-19 cases.

More than 5,400 patients were discharged today, even as the active caseload jumped to 59,564.

The state recorded seven Covid-19 related deaths on Saturday, which was the highest in eight months. Ahmedabad and Surat cities recorded two deaths each, while Surat rural, Navsari, and Rajkot rural recorded one death. The cumulative death toll went up to 10,151, the bulletin showed.

Separately, more than 1.76 lakh vaccine doses were administered in the state today to take the total vaccination number to 9.46 crore. The number of recipients in the age group of 15-18 who have received the vaccine touched 21.16 lakh, while 5.16 lakh persons have received the precaution dose.
