The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to reduce festive illuminations across the city during Diwali this year to conserve electricity.
The decision was announced by Standing Committee Chairman Kamleshbhai Patel after the committee’s weekly meeting on Thursday, October 29, 2026.Patel said decorative lighting would be limited to seven locations this year, compared with several locations in previous years.
These will include six bridges across the Sabarmati River and the temple of Goddess Bhadrakali, the city’s presiding deity. In previous years, festive illuminations were installed at several locations across Ahmedabad, including bridges, traffic circles, underpasses and government buildings. The civic body has also decided to reduce the duration of the lighting.
Traditionally, the illuminations remained switched on from 7 pm to 7 am. This year, they will operate only from 7 pm to 1 am.However, the lighting hours will be extended on Diwali and New Year’s Eve, when the illuminations will remain switched on throughout the night.
The decision was among several issues discussed at the Standing Committee meeting, which also covered city development projects, public health, water management and safety arrangements.
