The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to officially recognise E100 fuel for specially designed and certified flex-fuel vehicles. The notification, issued on October 23, 2026, includes E100 alongside E85 under regulations covering fuel specifications, emission standards and vehicle testing.
The move paves the way for manufacturers to introduce vehicles capable of running on 100% bioethanol. It is aimed at reducing India’s dependence on crude oil imports and lowering vehicle emissions.
However, E100 fuel cannot be used in regular petrol vehicles or vehicles designed only to run on E20 fuel. Only compatible flex-fuel vehicles specifically designed and certified for E100 can use it.
