The Gujarat government has barred outsiders from entering government school premises or recording photographs and videos without written permission from the school principal.
Under new safety guidelines issued on Wednesday, school principals have been empowered to deny entry to visitors who pose a security risk or disrupt academic activities.
School heads must immediately inform the local police and education inspectors if anyone enters the campus without permission, refuses to leave, records unauthorised videos or interferes with school operations.
Violators may face criminal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, and the Information Technology Act, 2000, as applicable.
Visitors Must Register and Be Escorted
All visitors must enter their identity details in the school’s gate register before entering the premises. Access to classrooms, laboratories, libraries, hostels, playgrounds and toilets will require written permission and a staff escort.
However, authorised government officials visiting schools for administrative inspections will be exempt from obtaining prior permission.
Ban on Unauthorised Photography and Live Streaming
The guidelines prohibit unauthorised photography, videography, interviews, audio recording and social media live streaming involving students, teachers or school activities.
Schools have also been directed to prevent the unauthorised collection or publication of children’s personal information, identities and photographs to protect their privacy and safety.
Strict Enforcement Ordered
The Education Department issued the directive following formal approval by the state Cabinet on October 20, 2026.
District inspection officers have been instructed to ensure strict implementation of the new guidelines across government schools in Gujarat.
