The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has warned vendors against selling fruits and vegetables on public roads. Vendors found operating outside designated vegetable markets may have their carts seized, face heavy fines and police action.
The civic body has set up 11 new vegetable markets at different locations across the city. However, many vendors continue to sell their produce on roads and footpaths using carts and mats, causing traffic problems.The AMC Estate Department said strict action will be taken against vendors operating at unauthorised locations. Their carts may be confiscated, fines imposed and criminal complaints filed.
The civic body has issued similar warnings in the past, but roadside vending continues at several places. Roads around the AMC’s main office have also witnessed such encroachments.
