Biometric Aadhaar authentication will become mandatory for domestic LPG consumers who want to book refills at the regulated retail price with applicable subsidy from October 1, 2026.The government said the move is aimed at ensuring that subsidised LPG reaches eligible households and preventing the diversion of domestic cylinders for commercial and industrial use.
What changes from October 1?
Consumers who have already completed biometric Aadhaar authentication will not need to repeat the process. Their LPG refills will continue as usual. Those who have not completed the authentication will be able to book refills at the regulated price with subsidy only after completing the process.According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, or 89.9% of the total, had completed biometric Aadhaar authentication as of September 19, 2026.
How to complete Aadhaar authentication
Consumers can complete the authentication process through several channels:
During LPG delivery
At their LPG distributor’s showroom
Through the mobile apps of state-owned oil marketing companies
Indane customers can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas customers can use HelloBPCL, and HP Gas customers can use HP PAY.
What happens if authentication is not completed?
The government has clarified that consumers who are unwilling or unable to complete biometric Aadhaar authentication will still be able to receive LPG.However, they will have to register their choice through their oil marketing company’s digital channels, such as the consumer portal, mobile app, WhatsApp chatbot or IVRS.Such consumers will receive LPG at the applicable market price without subsidy, through 5-kg or 10-kg cylinders, subject to local availability.
Why is the government introducing the requirement?
According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, Aadhaar authentication is intended to link each LPG connection with an authenticated consumer, prevent the diversion of subsidised domestic cylinders and remove duplicate or ineligible connections. The government has also said the measure will make subsidy delivery more targeted and transparent.
Authentication deadline and progress
Consumers were initially asked to complete biometric Aadhaar authentication by June 30, 2026. The deadline was extended several times, with September 14 being the final extended deadline mentioned by the ministry. The nationwide authentication drive has been underway since October 2023. The government said more than 12 crore SMS and WhatsApp messages had been sent as part of the awareness campaign.Consumers who have not yet completed biometric Aadhaar authentication have been advised to do so before October 1.
In short: From October 1, biometric Aadhaar authentication will be required to receive subsidised domestic LPG refills at the regulated price. Consumers who have already completed authentication need not repeat it. Those who do not complete the process can still get LPG, but at the applicable market price without subsidy.
