With Navratri approaching, Gujarat police have intensified a statewide drive against vehicles without number plates or those using tampered, hidden or non-standard plates. The campaign, aimed at improving women’s safety and preventing crime, was ordered by state DGP Gyanendra Singh Malik and will continue from September 1 to October 14.
Between September 1 and 20, police registered 18,014 cases for number-plate violations and detained 4,187 vehicles. Fines totalling ₹58.56 lakh were collected during the period.
Surat city reported 1,786 cases, followed by Vadodara city with 1,959 and Banaskantha with 1,363 cases.
Traffic teams across the state are checking vehicles for missing, concealed, altered and fancy number plates. Officials said plates with non-standard fonts, hidden digits or stylised designs can lead to legal action.
State Traffic Branch SP V Sahitya urged vehicle owners and drivers to follow the rules and use clear, standard number plates. Motorists have been advised to check their plates and replace any damaged, altered or non-standard plates during the ongoing drive.
No number plate, no fuel in Rajkot
In Rajkot, fuel stations have been instructed not to supply petrol or diesel to vehicles without proper number plates. Motorists have been advised to get their registration plates corrected before visiting fuel stations.
