Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, younger brother of Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, died on Monday at the age of 76, prompting Dubai to announce a 10-day period of official mourning across the emirate.
The Dubai Ruler’s Court announced the mourning period with immediate effect. During the 10-day period, flags across Dubai will be flown at half-mast as the emirate pays tribute to Sheikh Ahmed. The announcement was also confirmed by the UAE’s official news agency.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid paid tribute to his brother following his death, saying he would remain in the family’s prayers and hearts. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan also offered condolences to Sheikh Mohammed and the Al Maktoum family, recalling Sheikh Ahmed’s longstanding contributions to the UAE.
Sheikh Ahmed’s Public Life
Sheikh Ahmed was the fourth and youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the former Ruler of Dubai. He served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and also held senior positions in the private sector. He was also associated with Dubai’s sporting community for several decades.
His association with Al Wasl Sports Club was particularly prominent. He was among those involved in the club’s early formation in the 1960s and later served as its president for decades. Under his leadership, Al Wasl became one of the UAE’s prominent sporting clubs and secured multiple domestic football titles.
Sheikh Ahmed also had a military career after graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. He later served in Dubai’s Central Military Region and rose to become its commander. His public service also extended to equestrian and marine sports in Dubai.
The 10-day mourning period began on Monday, with tributes continuing to pour in from UAE leaders and institutions following the announcement of his death.
