After months of uncertainty over admissions, students seeking admission to St Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad, will now have to apply afresh through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) portal. The college has announced that around 1,800 vacant undergraduate and postgraduate seats for the 2026-27 academic year will be filled through GCAS.
The decision is an interim arrangement amid the ongoing legal dispute over the admission process. The announcement, made on September 12, gives students another opportunity to seek admission. However, those who had already registered directly with the college will also have to submit fresh applications through GCAS.
Their earlier registrations will not be considered valid under the new process. The prolonged uncertainty has already forced several students who were eligible for admission on merit to look for alternatives. After waiting for months, many enrolled in other colleges and private universities to avoid losing an academic year.Students who have already secured admission elsewhere now face a difficult choice.
Applying through GCAS could mean giving up their existing admission, losing fees already paid and going through another merit-based selection process. For many, staying with their current college may be the safer option.St Xavier’s said the interim arrangement was adopted in the broader academic interest of students while protecting the college’s rights and submissions in the ongoing proceedings before the Gujarat High Court.
Students who had not applied earlier will also be eligible to register under the new process. The vacant seats will be allotted on merit, with authorities aiming to complete admissions at the earliest so students can begin the academic year without further delay.
The GCAS portal is expected to reopen shortly. Details of the registration schedule and application process are likely to be announced soon.
