Liquor sales in GIFT City have increased 15-fold, even as Ahmedabad and Surat recorded thousands of cases across major crime categories in the year ending July 2026, according to the Home Department’s written reply to Congress MLA Amit Chavda.
More than 38,800 accused were arrested, while 725 remained missing. Liquor offences accounted for the largest share of cases in both cities.Ahmedabad recorded 12,889 liquor cases, 2,860 thefts, 1,495 gambling cases, 495 cyber frauds, 289 rape cases, 225 kidnappings, 117 molestation cases, 83 murders, 56 robberies and 10 extortion cases.
Surat recorded 8,556 liquor cases, 1,275 thefts, 1,137 gambling cases, 333 cyber frauds, 331 rape cases, 297 kidnappings, 134 molestation cases, 115 murders, 54 robberies and 108 extortion cases. Surat recorded more rape, murder, molestation and kidnapping cases than Ahmedabad.
1,557 cops face action over bootlegging
The Home Department told the Assembly that disciplinary action was taken against 1,557 police personnel in Banaskantha and Sabarkantha over two years for alleged involvement in bootlegging. The reply was given to Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani.The figure does not include police officers of SP or DySP rank. The department said the action followed liquor-related cases in which local police personnel were found to be involved.
