Ahmedabad’s Kalupur police registered a case against six women after they were allegedly found soliciting men near Ratanpol Gate on Relief Road on Saturday afternoon.
The incident came to light during routine patrolling by personnel from the Kalupur police station. Around 3.30 pm, constable Bhagwatiben Bhikhabhai and other police personnel were monitoring the area opposite the Central Bank branch when they allegedly noticed a group of women approaching male pedestrians and making gestures to attract their attention.
Police subsequently detained the women and recorded their details. They were identified as Artiben Parmar (50), Anguriben Yadav (40), Jaymala Khatik (30), Nayanaben Kumawat (38), Manjulaben Parmar (60), and Bhumiben Panchal (42).
According to police, the women are residents of different parts of Ahmedabad, including Odhav, Maninagar, Naroda, Ramol and Vastral. Following the incident, Kalupur police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Gujarat Police Act relating to obscene conduct in a public place.
Police said no individual pedestrian had approached them with a separate complaint. However, based on their observations during the patrol, officers initiated action over the alleged conduct and solicitation on the busy road.
Relief Road and the Ratanpol area are among the heavily frequented commercial stretches of Ahmedabad’s old city, where large numbers of shoppers and pedestrians pass through daily. Police regularly conduct patrols in the area to maintain public order.
The six women were questioned as part of the proceedings, and police have begun further investigation into the circumstances of the incident and their activities in the area.
