Global economic uncertainty and tighter overseas hiring budgets have significantly affected international placements at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A), with only six of the 398 students who participated in the final placement process securing jobs abroad this year.
According to IIM-A’s official final placement report, 402 candidates were eligible for the placement process, including 385 graduating students, one student from the previous batch and six dual-degree scholars. Of them, 398 participated in the institutional placement process, while 10 opted out.
Of the participating students, 386 accepted domestic job offers, while only six secured international placements.
International offers limited to three destinations
The six international placements were spread across just three overseas destinations, with the Middle East accounting for most of the offers and the remaining placements going to East Asia.
International compensation packages ranged from $40,016 (around ₹33.5 lakh) to $67,500 (around ₹56.5 lakh) annually. The average international package stood at $55,227.
Domestic placements remain strong
While overseas recruitment remained subdued, domestic recruiters absorbed the majority of IIM-A graduates. The highest domestic salary rose to ₹81.60 lakh per annum, compared with ₹65 lakh in the previous placement cycle.
The average domestic salary also increased to ₹28.82 lakh per annum from ₹25.31 lakh last year.
Consulting firms emerged as the largest recruiters, hiring 155 graduates. The Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) sector followed with 81 hires, while technology companies recruited 33 graduates. Pharmaceutical and healthcare firms hired 13 students.
Meanwhile, only two students chose to forgo placement offers to pursue entrepreneurial ventures with support from IIM-A’s fellowship programme.
