As the country observes National Sports Day on Saturday, August 29, the Gujarat government said the state is working towards establishing itself as a major sporting hub by combining grassroots talent identification with the development of modern sports infrastructure.
According to a government statement, Gujarat, traditionally recognised for its strong trade and industrial base, is increasingly using sports as a means to empower young people and nurture sporting talent.
The government said the Khel Mahakumbh has played a key role in identifying promising athletes, including those from remote and rural areas. Efforts are also being made to provide stronger support to athletes competing at higher levels through the Shaktidoot Yojana.
Under the scheme, selected sportspersons receive financial assistance covering training, nutrition, sports equipment and participation in national and international competitions.
The government also highlighted the development of modern sports complexes and stadiums at the district level, with facilities for athletes across various disciplines.
It said projects such as the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura and the proposed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave are expected to further strengthen Gujarat’s sporting infrastructure and contribute to its goal of developing a globally recognised sports ecosystem.
