India’s first LNG-diesel dual-fuel DEMU train is likely to begin commercial operations from Sabarmati Railway Station, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah expected to flag it off on September 4.
The eight-coach train features two 1,400-HP DEMU Driving Power Cars that have been modified to run on both diesel and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The upgraded power cars can replace up to 40% of diesel consumption with LNG, helping lower fuel expenses and emissions.
The train has already completed more than 2,000 km of field trials as part of the testing process.
According to the Railways, the dual-fuel technology could help save around ₹24 lakh annually in fuel costs, including approximately ₹11.9 lakh per power car. Using LNG is also expected to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides.
The train can cover around 222 km on a single 2,200-litre LNG tank, while its system can automatically switch between LNG and diesel without affecting power output.
The route for the new LNG-diesel DEMU is expected to be announced soon.
