Serious irregularities have been reported at Natraj School in Ahmedabad’s Odhav area, prompting the District Education Officer (DEO) to initiate strict action. School authorities were allegedly pressuring teachers to record attendance for students who were not regularly attending classes, while teachers’ service and financial benefits were also reportedly withheld.
Surprise Checks Reveal Attendance Irregularities
The alleged irregularities came to light during surprise inspections conducted as part of a drive against dummy schools in Ahmedabad.
According to the DEO, repeated inspections over the past year found actual student attendance consistently below 50%. While attendance records and online systems reportedly showed higher figures, several students were found absent from classrooms.
Following the findings, authorities ordered the immediate closure of 11 classes at the school.
100% Grant Cut and Recognition Cancellation Proposed
The investigation also found allegations that school management had withheld teachers’ entitled benefits, including benefits related to five-year salary orders and nine-year higher pay scales.
The school was reportedly issued notices three times, but authorities said no satisfactory explanation was received. The DEO has therefore sent a detailed report to higher authorities recommending a 100% cut in the school’s grant and cancellation of its recognition.
Teachers’ Pending Benefits to Be Paid
The administration has directed the school management to release all pending benefits owed to teachers. A final report has also been submitted to the higher authorities regarding further action against the school.
Meanwhile, the school management has submitted a representation to the Commissioner of Schools challenging the action. A final decision on the representation is awaited.
