A woman arriving from Sharjah was intercepted at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold worth around ₹83 lakh into India without declaring it or paying customs duty.
The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department seized a 499.5-gram gold chain made of 24-carat gold from the passenger.
According to customs officials, the woman was intercepted on Sunday based on passenger profiling after she arrived from Sharjah. During a search, officers allegedly found the gold chain concealed inside her high-neck sweater.
Gold Seized During Airport Check
The seized chain weighed 499.5 grams and was found to be of 24 KT purity. Officials valued it at approximately ₹83 lakh.
The passenger was later released on bail after the gold was seized. Sources said she is a medical professional working in the Gulf and had completed both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Gujarat.
A customs official said the case appears to involve deliberate non-declaration of the gold, while further investigation is underway to determine the full details of the incident.
