Rising sugar prices have begun affecting consumers in Ahmedabad, with several tea and coffee stalls increasing their prices. Sugar, which was reportedly selling at around ₹45 per kg about 10 days ago, has now crossed ₹70 per kg, significantly increasing the cost of preparing beverages.
Half-Cutting Tea Now ₹15
The price of a half-cutting tea, earlier available for around ₹10, has been raised to ₹15 at several stalls. Similarly, half a cup of coffee that previously cost ₹15 is now being sold for around ₹20.Some tea vendors have also stopped offering ₹10 tea parcels, with minimum parcel prices now ranging from ₹15 to ₹20.
Sugar Price Rises by ₹25 in 10 Days
Local wholesale and retail traders said sugar prices have increased sharply from around ₹45 per kg to more than ₹70 per kg in just 10 days. The rise comes amid already high prices of milk and other ingredients used to prepare tea and coffee.
For tea stall owners, the increase in input costs has made price hikes difficult to avoid. However, the higher rates are adding to the everyday expenses of daily-wage workers, commuters and middle-class consumers.
The sugar price surge is therefore being felt beyond household kitchens, with Ahmedabad’s popular tea stalls also passing on the increased costs to customers.
