At least four tourists, including women, were allegedly assaulted at the historic Sinhagad Fort near Pune after members of the Samast Hindu Bandhav Army objected to their clothing, particularly shorts and sleeveless outfits, Pune Rural Police said.
According to police, the incidents took place between 2 pm and 5 pm on Sunday (August 16), with visitors from four separate groups allegedly being confronted by members of the outfit. Videos purportedly showing clashes at the fort have since surfaced on social media.
Police have registered a case against eight people, including three women, in connection with the incidents. The accused have been booked under provisions relating to assault, rioting, unlawful assembly and criminal intimidation. Police teams are currently searching for the accused, while further investigation is underway.
The alleged confrontation reportedly centred on the tourists’ clothes. According to reports, some visitors were questioned about wearing shorts and sleeveless clothing, with an argument subsequently turning into physical altercations. One report said a family visiting the fort was also confronted after their eight-year-old daughter was wearing Bermuda shorts.
The incident occurred amid a large tourist turnout at Sinhagad during the monsoon season. The fort, earlier known as Kondhana, is a prominent historical site located in Donaje village in Pune district and is associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s general Tanaji Malusare.
The latest incident has also sparked debate over alleged moral policing at tourist sites and the safety of visitors. Police are examining the available video footage and gathering further information as part of the investigation.
