Ahmedabad’s Kankaria Lake has added a new nighttime attraction with the inauguration of a permanent architectural lighting system spread across approximately 4.5 km of the lakefront.
Ahmedabad Mayor Hiteshbhai Barot inaugurated the system at a programme held at Gate No. 1 in Pushpakunj, Kankaria. MP Dineshbhai Makwana, MLA Amulbhai Bhatt, senior AMC office-bearers and officials were also present.
The new lighting system has been designed to enhance the appearance of Kankaria after sunset while improving illumination across the lakefront. It features digital lighting processing, projection mapping, multimedia effects and sound-synchronised thematic displays.
The project includes the design, installation, testing and commissioning of the permanent architectural lighting system, along with projection mapping at monuments and entrances, facade lighting, area illumination and multimedia displays.
12 themes planned for festivals and events
The lighting system will feature different themes for festivals and major events held throughout the year. At least 12 themes will be developed during the contract period, allowing the displays to be customised according to different occasions.
The modern system replaces the older lighting arrangement, which had become outdated and provided inadequate illumination. The new setup is expected to improve the overall visitor experience at the lake, which attracts tourists and visitors from across India and abroad throughout the year.
Special lighting along the walkway
One of the key features is the installation of post-top lanterns along the Kankaria walkway. The fixtures use dual-optics technology to provide sufficient illumination on the walkway while creating a softer ambient glow in the surrounding area.
The fixtures have an IP66 waterproof rating, making them suitable for the humid, windy and monsoon conditions around the lake. Their double-skinned construction and finish have also been designed to complement the greenery and lakefront surroundings.
The system has also been designed for easier maintenance. Servicing and cleaning can be carried out on site without removing the entire fixture from its pole, which is expected to reduce maintenance time and costs.
The project includes five years of operation and maintenance. During this period, Kankaria Lake will continue to feature modern lighting, thematic displays and projection mapping for festivals, special events and other occasions.
