The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning a citywide “Pedestrian First” footpath network to make walking safer, easier and more accessible across the city.
Under the proposed plan, footpaths will have a minimum clear walking space of 1.8 to 2 metres. The network will also include zebra crossings, pedestrian signals, road markings, ramps and improved signage. The focus will be on creating continuous, obstruction-free walking routes along busy roads, junctions, schools, bus stops and other high-footfall areas.
Instead of developing isolated stretches of footpaths, AMC plans to connect them with junctions, intersections, bus stops, building entrances and other important destinations to create a seamless pedestrian network.
The civic body will also identify and remove or relocate obstacles occupying pedestrian space, including utility boxes, signboards, street furniture, construction materials and unauthorised parking. Footpaths may be widened at locations witnessing heavy pedestrian movement.
To improve accessibility for visually impaired people, tactile paving will be installed at suitable locations. Ramps with appropriate gradients will also be provided at crossings and junctions, keeping children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities in mind.
Road safety will be a key part of the initiative. Pedestrian signal phases will be introduced at signalised junctions wherever required, allowing sufficient time for people to cross roads safely. Special focus will be given to schools, public transport hubs, busy intersections and other areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.
AMC also plans to improve lighting at pedestrian crossings to enhance safety after dark. The planning and implementation will follow applicable road safety and accessibility standards, including guidelines issued by the Indian Roads Congress and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The broader objective is to create a connected, accessible and obstruction-free pedestrian network across Ahmedabad, encouraging safer walking and improving overall road safety.
