The Subhash Bridge RTO is planning to add a second driving test track and extend testing hours to reduce the long waiting period faced by applicants.
Around 80% of applicants are currently failing the new AI-based driving test, leading to a growing backlog. Applicants at Subhash Bridge RTO are waiting around 40 to 45 days for a test appointment, while the waiting period at Vastral RTO has reached nearly two months.
Subhash Bridge RTO officer B.R. Suryavanshi said a proposal for a second test track has been made. Once work begins, the new track is expected to be completed within four months.
The AI-based system conducts the driving test digitally with minimal human intervention. It detects even minor mistakes, resulting in a significantly higher failure rate compared with the earlier system. Previously, the RTO conducted around 300 to 400 driving tests a day, with most applicants clearing them.
The Transport Department is also considering extending testing hours. Currently, appointments are available in two shifts between 8 am and 8 pm at Subhash Bridge RTO. Officials are considering starting tests as early as 6 am to accommodate more applicants and reduce the waiting period.
