The Gujarat government has informed the Gujarat High Court that it has significantly strengthened the state’s policing infrastructure through large-scale recruitment, technology integration and the creation of specialised units to improve law enforcement, traffic management, cyber crime investigations and emergency response.
The details were submitted by Government Pleader GH Virk before a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice DN Ray.
As part of the expansion, the state has increased the strength of the Traffic Brigade by 3,261 personnel across 38 districts and cities, including the deployment of 650 personnel in Ahmedabad. The government also said it is modernising traffic management by collaborating with the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, under the Gujarat Traffic Intelligence and Road Safety Platform.
The state has also undertaken a major recruitment drive to address vacancies in the police force. In the first phase, 10,861 police constables and 472 Police Sub-Inspectors have been selected, while recruitment for another 13,591 posts is underway in the second phase.
In addition, the government has sanctioned 2,109 new constabulary posts, including 2,000 positions for the Dial 112 Janrakshak emergency response system and 50 posts for the AI-based VISHWAS surveillance project.
To further enhance policing, the Directorate General of Police’s Prosecution and Crime Cell has been reinforced with 32 dedicated constables, while 27 armed constables will be posted at Range Offices. The government also stated that specialised personnel are being inducted to strengthen operations against narcotics trafficking, cyber crime and coastal security.
