Heavy overnight showers drenched Ahmedabad, with the city recording an average rainfall of 3.01 inches in the 24-hour period ending at 6 am on August 1. Rainfall varied across localities, ranging from 1.79 inches to 4.09 inches, according to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
Thaltej received the highest rainfall at 4.09 inches, followed by Bopal (3.90 inches), Bodakdev and Asarwa (3.82 inches each), Science City (3.76 inches), Chandlodia (3.72 inches), Motera (3.64 inches), Kalupur (3.54 inches), Ranip (3.39 inches), Viratnagar (3.29 inches), Lambha (3.13 inches), Indrapuri (3.01 inches) and Naroda (2.99 inches).
Among the city’s administrative zones, the North-West Zone recorded the highest average rainfall at 3.49 inches. It was followed by the Central Zone (3.46 inches), West Zone (3.11 inches), South-West Zone (2.91 inches), South Zone (2.87 inches), North Zone (2.78 inches) and East Zone (2.49 inches).
AMC data shows that Ahmedabad has received 23.22 inches of rainfall so far this monsoon, which is about 64.5 per cent of the city’s average seasonal rainfall.
The intense spell of rain caused waterlogging and traffic congestion in several parts of the city, particularly in western Ahmedabad. Commuters faced long delays as flooded roads slowed traffic, while residents attributed the recurring problem to inadequate drainage and ongoing civic works.
As a safety measure, the Mithakhali and Shahibaug underpasses were temporarily shut after water accumulated on the roads. The Mithakhali underpass was reopened within 30 minutes after the water level receded, while traffic resumed at the Shahibaug underpass about an hour later.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation deployed dewatering pumps at major waterlogging locations to clear stagnant water and restore traffic flow. Water levels receded from most affected areas within two to three hours, bringing relief to commuters.
