A breathtaking video of the Vande Bharat Express crossing the world’s highest railway arch bridge through dense monsoon fog in Jammu & Kashmir has gone viral, showcasing one of India’s finest engineering achievements.Shared by the Ministry of Railways on X, the video captures the sleek semi-high-speed train emerging from thick mist as it glides across the iconic Chenab Rail Bridge. Set against cloud-covered Himalayan peaks and lush green valleys, the visuals beautifully blend modern infrastructure with the region’s natural landscape.
Engineering marvel
Built as part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, the Chenab Rail Bridge stands 359 metres (1,178 feet) above the Chenab River, making it the world’s highest railway arch bridge. It is around 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower and provides a vital rail link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India.Constructing the bridge was one of Indian Railways’ toughest engineering challenges. Teams worked through difficult terrain, deep gorges, unstable rock formations and harsh weather in the Himalayas. Advanced technologies, including 3D spatial modelling and satellite imagery, were used to ensure the bridge’s structural stability. Time-lapse satellite images from 2017 to 2025 documented the gradual construction of the massive steel-and-concrete structure.The viral monsoon video has once again highlighted the bridge’s engineering excellence and the breathtaking scenery surrounding it.
Boost to connectivity
Beyond its architectural significance, the Chenab Rail Bridge is expected to transform connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir by providing year-round rail access to the Kashmir Valley. The rail link will reduce reliance on highways that are often disrupted by landslides and severe weather during the monsoon and winter.Improved rail connectivity is also expected to boost tourism, support trade, strengthen agricultural supply chains and generate employment across the region. Services such as the Vande Bharat Express will make travel to the Valley faster, safer and more comfortable.
