Surat’s Kamrej Police have arrested Ahmedabad-based builder Umang Thakkar, owner of the iconic Patang Hotel, in connection with an alleged ₹1.56 crore land fraud case. Police have also booked Neel Thakkar and Kantha Thakkar, partners of Satya Sankalp Buildcon LLP, for allegedly cheating buyers by selling plots that had already been transferred to another person years earlier.
Following raids at multiple locations in Ahmedabad and Surat, police traced and arrested Umang Thakkar. He is currently in police custody as investigators examine the financial transactions linked to the project.
How the alleged fraud came to light
The case was registered based on a complaint filed by Pushpakbhai Dineshbhai Patel, a 36-year-old resident of Surat.
According to the complaint, in 2025 the accused promoted an affordable plotting project, ‘Sahjanand Nirvana’, in Kholvad village through advertisements and hoardings. After speaking directly with Umang Thakkar, Patel booked a plot in his wife’s name and paid ₹65.59 lakh in multiple instalments.
However, when he approached the revenue authorities to complete the land transfer, official records allegedly showed that the same plot had already been sold to another buyer, Deepakbhai Nagjibhai Patel, in 2018.
Police said the complainant neither received possession of the plot nor a refund. Around 15 to 16 buyers have lodged complaints at Kamrej Police Station over the alleged fraud.
Based on the complaints, Kamrej Police arrested Umang Thakkar in connection with the alleged ₹1.56 crore land scam and have launched a detailed investigation into the case, including possible financial irregularities and other legal violations.
