The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has proposed setting up two new AMTS bus depots with electric bus charging infrastructure at Nikol-Kathwada and Tragad as part of its plan to transition to a fully electric public transport system.
The civic body plans to invest nearly ₹90 crore in the two facilities to support the large-scale induction of electric buses in the coming years.
Nikol Depot to Charge 114 Buses at Once
The proposed Nikol-Kathwada depot, estimated to cost ₹61.89 crore, will be capable of charging 114 electric buses simultaneously, making it one of the largest charging hubs in the city.
The Tragad depot, estimated at ₹28.08 crore, will also feature modern charging infrastructure to support the growing AMTS electric bus fleet. The proposals have been placed before the AMC General Board for approval.
Charging Stations Planned at Lal Darwaja and Ghuma
AMC also plans to build dedicated charging stations at Lal Darwaja and Ghuma.
An opportunity charging station will be developed at the Ghuma terminus at a cost of ₹1.82 crore, allowing up to five buses to recharge during scheduled halts.
Another charging station, estimated at ₹2.65 crore, will be set up near the Ritz Hotel compound at the Nehru Bridge end of Lal Darwaja to facilitate charging for city buses.
AMC Aims for 1,500 Electric Buses
At present, AMTS operates 111 electric buses across Ahmedabad. The civic body plans to replace its CNG-powered fleet and expand the electric bus network to around 1,500 buses over the next year.
To support the expansion, AMC will install new electric power lines at the Vasna, Wadaj, Memnagar and Lal Darwaja depots at an estimated cost of ₹60 lakh.
The proposed projects are expected to strengthen Ahmedabad’s electric public transport infrastructure and improve the efficiency of the city’s growing sustainable mobility network.
