An online booking fraud targeting pilgrims visiting the Jain pilgrimage town of Palitana in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district has come to light.
Cyber fraudsters allegedly created fake websites and mobile numbers in the names of well-known dharamshalas to dupe devotees by collecting advance room booking payments.
According to a complaint filed with the Bhavnagar Cyber Crime Police, the fraudsters created around 10 fake websites and used five mobile numbers while posing as representatives of Shri Mewar Bhavan and Suntar Bhavan dharamshalas.
The fake websites reportedly copied the names, addresses, photographs, and other details of the dharamshalas to appear genuine. Pilgrims from across the country were allegedly convinced to book rooms online and were asked to pay advance amounts, which were fraudulently collected.
The complaint was lodged by the manager of the dharamshala, who has been serving there for the past 16 years. Based on the complaint, the Bhavnagar Cyber Crime Police have registered a case against unidentified persons and launched an investigation.
Authorities have urged pilgrims to verify the authenticity of websites and contact dharamshalas through official channels before making any online payments for room bookings.
