India has launched its first hydrogen-powered passenger train, marking a major step towards clean and eco-friendly rail transport. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the train from Jind railway station in Haryana on July 17.
The train will run on the Jind–Sonipat route under Northern Railway, making India one of the few countries to introduce hydrogen-powered passenger rail services.
Fares From ₹5
One of the biggest highlights of the new service is its low ticket price.
- Minimum fare: ₹5
- Maximum fare: ₹25 (depending on the distance travelled)
The starting fare is even lower than the platform ticket at many railway stations.
Route and Capacity
The train covers nearly 90 km between Jind and Sonipat in about two hours. It has 10 coaches and can carry around 2,600 passengers.
The train has a maximum operational speed of 75 kmph and a design speed of 110 kmph.
How the Train Works
Unlike diesel or electric trains, the hydrogen train generates electricity onboard using hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen reacts with oxygen inside the fuel cell to produce electricity, releasing only water vapour and heat, making it a zero-emission mode of transport.
A dedicated hydrogen production and refuelling facility has been set up at Jind to support the service.

A Milestone for Green Transport
With this launch, India joins countries such as Germany, France, the UK, Japan, China and the US that have adopted hydrogen-powered rail technology.
Along with flagging off the train, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station, dedicated 75 upgraded railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, and flagged off the Sant Ravidas Express between Amritsar and Varanasi.
The launch of the hydrogen train marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to promote clean, sustainable and affordable public transport.
