The Gujarat High Court has directed the state government to impose a complete ban on plastic in eco-sensitive areas such as Thol Bird Sanctuary and Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary while hearing a public interest litigation seeking better environmental protection.
The court also instructed the government to regulate boating activities in these bird sanctuaries by making licenses mandatory for boat operators. It clarified that boating will continue, but visitors should avoid carrying plastic items and instead use reusable steel water bottles.
Expressing concern over tourist activities, the High Court observed that visitors often carry food and plastic waste into the sanctuaries and sometimes feed birds, which can harm the ecosystem. The court said such practices should be strictly controlled to protect these environmentally sensitive areas.
The state government informed the court that it is preparing a policy in line with the court’s directions. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) said it has issued notices to industries near Thol, sealed units violating environmental norms, and initiated action following meetings with local authorities and other government departments.
The matter has been posted for further hearing next week.
