After the inauguration of the cable-stayed bridge at Bhat (Rajasthan) Circle, the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) has decided to construct the long-pending underpass at the busy junction to further ease traffic congestion.
The underpass, which was approved by AUDA in 2022 at an estimated cost of ₹50 crore, had remained on hold for several years. It will now be built as part of the ₹2,200-crore six-laning project of the Sardar Patel (SP) Ring Road.
The cable-stayed bridge at Bhat Circle, inaugurated recently by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, was sanctioned in 2019 at a cost of ₹135.7 crore, with AUDA sharing half of the construction cost.
While the bridge was completed, the underpass project was delayed despite being approved around the same time. With the six-laning of the 76-km SP Ring Road now underway, AUDA has revived the underpass project.
Officials said tenders for widening the eastern and western stretches of the SP Ring Road have already been approved. The project also includes widening service roads, with the underpass at Bhat Circle forming a key part of the overall road expansion plan.
