Ahmedabad’s new eight-lane Subhash Bridge over the Sabarmati River is expected to be completed within 24 months, according to a proposal prepared after the decision to demolish the existing bridge and rebuild it entirely.
While the full project is scheduled to take two years, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is also aiming to open one side of the bridge within 16 months to ease traffic.
The revised proposal has increased the project’s estimated cost from Rs 236 crore to Rs 241 crore, mainly because the entire bridge, including its pillars, will now be reconstructed. The contractor will also be compensated for any rise in the prices of steel, cement, bitumen, labour, fuel and other construction materials during the project.
The existing Subhash Bridge has remained closed to traffic since December 2025. So far, work has been limited to demolishing parts of the old structure. Initially, only the bridge’s superstructure was to be replaced, but the plan was changed after cracks were found in the old pillars. Municipal Commissioner later announced that a completely new bridge would be built.
The proposal will be placed before the Municipal Roads and Buildings Committee for approval. The project will continue to be executed by Dineshchandra R. Agarwal Infracon Pvt. Ltd. under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme.
