The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has made it mandatory for all pet cat owners to register their cats with the civic body, similar to the existing rule for pet dogs. The last date for registration is September 30, and the registration fee is 200 per cat.
Pet owners will need to submit documents such as their Aadhaar card or voter ID, property tax receipt or electricity bill, photographs of the cat, details of where it is kept, and its vaccination records. Registration can be completed online through the AMC website or offline at designated centres.
The initiative is part of AMC’s plan to make Ahmedabad rabies-free by 2030 under the National Action Plan for Rabies Elimination, which places responsibility on pet owners to register and vaccinate their animals.
AMC had earlier made registration compulsory for pet dogs from January 1, 2025. Due to a poor response, the deadline was extended several times, and the registration fee for dogs increased from ₹200 to ₹2,000. So far, 19,582 pet dogs have been registered between January 2025 and July 2026.
Like pet dogs, cat owners will also have to upload updated vaccination certificates every year. AMC is also planning to launch a mobile app to make the registration process easier.
According to AMC officials, the registration of pet dogs and cats is being carried out as per the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations (GPMC) Act and the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court.
