Heavy overnight rainfall has affected many parts of India as the southwest monsoon has now covered the entire country.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts in several states, warning of heavy rain, waterlogging, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.
From flooded roads in Delhi-NCR to industrial accidents in Maharashtra and landslides in Kerala and Uttarakhand, the monsoon has caused major disruptions across the country.
Delhi-NCR faces severe flooding
Delhi witnessed heavy overnight rain, leading to waterlogging and traffic chaos. The Safdarjung weather station recorded 72.6 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, prompting the IMD to issue a red alert for Delhi and nearby areas of Haryana.
Strong winds of up to 60 kmph uprooted trees in several areas, including East of Kailash, while many roads were flooded.

- Lodhi Road: 80.2 mm
- Ridge: 77.8 mm
- Safdarjung: 72.6 mm
- Palam: 63 mm
- Ayanagar: 57.4 mm
Heavy flooding disrupted traffic on the Delhi-Noida Expressway, while waterlogging was reported at New Delhi Railway Station, Vikas Marg, Dwarka, and other parts of the city.
In Gurugram, which received 115 mm of rain in just 33 hours, several vehicles were stranded on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway and Sohna Road.
Road collapse and building accident
A road caved in at Atal Chowk in Ghaziabad’s Vasundhara area, trapping a car and a scooter.
In Delhi’s Rohini area, an under-construction building collapsed due to heavy rain, killing three people.
Maharashtra battles floods
Maharashtra continues to face heavy monsoon damage, with more than 50 rain-related deaths reported so far this season. While Mumbai saw lighter rainfall, nearby districts remain badly affected.
Thousands of LPG cylinders swept away
Heavy flooding damaged the safety barrier at HPCL’s Patalganga LPG Bottling Plant, washing around 3,000 LPG cylinders into the Patalganga River and Kharpada Creek. Videos of the floating cylinders went viral, prompting authorities to issue safety warnings.
Rescue operations continue
In Thane, nearly 800 people have been evacuated over the past week. Three people lost their lives and 11 others were injured in rain-related incidents, including two teenagers who died after being struck by lightning in Murbad.
In Pimpri Chinchwad, a huge garbage dump collapsed onto a three-storey building. Teams from the NDRF, Indian Army, and fire department rescued nine people from the debris.
Landslides hit Kerala and Uttarakhand
Continuous rain has triggered landslides in several hilly areas.
In Kerala, orange alerts remain in place for Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. The death toll in the Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel landslide has risen to five, while rescue teams continue searching for four missing people.
In Uttarakhand, landslides have blocked roads in several areas. A major landslide damaged a structure along National Highway 707A in Tehri Garhwal. Haridwar is also facing flooding, and the IMD has issued red alerts for Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal. Residents in Laksar, Kotdwar, and Devrana have been advised to stay away from rivers and landslide-prone areas.
Weather outlook
The IMD has warned that heavy rainfall is likely to continue in many parts of the country.
- Northeast India: Assam and Meghalaya are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall until July 14. Heavy rain is also forecast in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura.
- Gujarat: Seawater flooding has disrupted normal life in Surat’s Sarthana area.
- Tamil Nadu: The Nilgiris are likely to receive rain with strong winds, while Chennai is expected to witness light showers under cloudy skies.
Authorities have advised people in affected areas to stay alert, follow IMD weather updates, and avoid flooded roads and landslide-prone locations.
