The first spell of rain in Ahmedabad exposed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) pre-monsoon preparedness after a major section of the main road in Sarkhej village caved in within minutes of rainfall, disrupting traffic and leaving commuters stranded.
According to local residents, the road had been dug up barely a month ago for the installation of a major pipeline.
They alleged that instead of carrying out proper restoration, officials simply filled the trench with soil as a temporary measure despite the approaching monsoon. The road gave way as rainwater seeped into the weakened surface, raising questions over the quality of the repair work.Following the incident, local corporators rushed to the spot along with civic officials.
To prevent any mishap, the affected stretch was immediately barricaded and closed to vehicular traffic. Authorities carried out temporary filling of the large crater, while permanent repairs will be undertaken after the rains subside, corporators said.
