A section of an RCC road in Ahmedabad’s Satellite area caved in after heavy rainfall on Sunday, causing a parked car to plunge into an approximately 20-foot-deep excavation at a nearby under-construction residential project.
The incident occurred at the construction site of the ‘Trineya Anadh’ residential project, located opposite Satellite Park in the Jodhpur area behind Star Bazaar. According to officials, the diaphragm wall built to support the excavation collapsed, causing the adjoining RCC road to give way. The parked car fell into the pit, while the metal barricades surrounding the construction site also collapsed.
Drainage Line Damaged
The cave-in also damaged the main drainage line beneath the road. Officials said the RCC road, which was constructed around three years ago, was washed away along with part of the drainage infrastructure.
Fortunately, no one was injured as the car was unoccupied at the time of the incident. However, the collapse has raised concerns among residents over the safety of roads located next to large construction sites during the monsoon.
Construction Work Halted
An Additional City Engineer of the South West Zone confirmed that both the road and the drainage line were damaged after the diaphragm wall collapsed.
Taking serious note of the incident, the Deputy Estate Officer of the South West Zone ordered an immediate halt to construction work at the site. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has also issued a notice to the builder seeking an explanation. Officials said the builder’s permissions have been kept on hold pending an inquiry, and further legal action will be taken based on the investigation.
Questions Over Cause
The incident occurred in Jodhpur Election Ward under Town Planning Scheme No. 6 on Final Plot Nos. 26, 27 and 28. The residential project had received approval in 2025 for two basement levels, a ground floor and 10 upper floors.
The collapse has sparked questions over whether it resulted from negligence by the builder or inadequate supervision by civic authorities. Officials have not yet identified who will be held responsible.
Technical Investigation Underway
Following the cave-in, civic officials barricaded the affected area and carried out an inspection. A technical assessment is underway to determine whether heavy rainfall, water seepage, soil erosion or shortcomings in the excavation’s protective structures caused the collapse.
Repair work is expected to begin after the assessment is completed. Residents have urged authorities to strengthen monitoring of excavation sites and road conditions during the monsoon to prevent similar incidents.
