The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued notices to more than 100 medical colleges across the country, including four in Gujarat, directing them to rectify deficiencies related to patient attendance and faculty strength within 45 days.
Sources said institutions that fail to comply may face strict action, including being barred from participating in the next round of medical admissions. The inspections come ahead of the upcoming medical admission process, with the NMC verifying whether colleges are meeting the infrastructure and operational commitments made while securing approval.
Under NMC norms, a medical college with 150 MBBS seats must record at least 800 Outpatient Department (OPD) visits daily, while its attached hospital should maintain a bed occupancy of at least 480 admitted patients. Such colleges are also required to have a total of 204 teaching and non-teaching staff members.
However, sources said several colleges have failed to meet these mandatory standards. Many institutions reportedly have fewer than 800 daily OPD patients and fall short of the required inpatient occupancy and staffing levels. In Gujarat, medical colleges in Junagadh and Jamnagar, along with two other institutions, have received notices over these deficiencies.
The Commission is also examining complaints that some colleges allegedly showed “ghost patients” and manipulated patient records to meet the prescribed norms. The allegations are under scrutiny as the NMC intensifies monitoring of medical colleges across the country.
