A jewellery shop in Ahmedabad’s Manek Chowk was targeted by a thief who allegedly walked away with gold jewellery worth Rs 2.8 lakh after pretending to be a customer.
The theft came to light when the shop owner found jewellery missing during the monthly stock check. After reviewing CCTV footage, the staff discovered that a customer had allegedly stolen a packet of gold earrings. A complaint has been registered at Khadia Police Station.
Theft Discovered During Stock Check
According to the complaint filed by Jigar Shah (40), who runs Jineshwar Jewellers in Manek Chowk, the missing jewellery was noticed while checking the shop’s stock on June 30.
Suspecting theft, the owner examined CCTV footage, which reportedly showed an unknown man stealing a packet of gold earrings from the shop.
Customer Allegedly Stole Earrings While Pretending to Shop
Police said the incident took place on June 26 at around 12.30 pm. The man entered the shop pretending to buy jewellery. While a female staff member was showing him different gold earrings, he allegedly took advantage of a moment when her attention was diverted and slipped a packet of earrings into his bag.
The packet contained 20 to 22 pairs of 18-carat gold earrings, weighing around 30 grams and valued at approximately Rs 2.8 lakh.
Before leaving, the man reportedly told the staff member, “I’ll come back later and buy it,” and walked out of the shop.
Police Investigating Using CCTV Footage
Based on the CCTV footage, Khadia Police have registered a case against the unidentified accused and launched an investigation to trace and arrest him.
The theft, which took place in broad daylight in the busy Manek Chowk market, has raised concerns among local jewellers and traders.
