In a significant step towards strengthening research infrastructure, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is set to establish a Centre for Advanced Materials Characterization at an estimated cost of Rs 11 crore. The Gujarat government has granted in-principle approval for the project, which aims to enhance cutting-edge research capabilities in science, technology and engineering.
The proposed facility will provide researchers and students with access to sophisticated scientific instruments essential for high-quality research in material science and related disciplines. The entire cost of the project will be funded by the state government. Preliminary surveys and administrative formalities have already commenced, while the procurement process is expected to begin after the official release of funds.
The centre will be equipped with seven advanced analytical instruments, including X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Raman Spectroscopy, Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope (FEG-SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and a UV-Visible Spectrometer (UV-Vis).
These instruments will support a broad spectrum of research activities. XRD will be used for crystal structure analysis, Raman Spectroscopy for molecular identification, LC-MS and GC-MS for chemical analysis, FEG-SEM for nanoscale imaging, FTIR for determining chemical composition, and UV-Vis spectroscopy for studying light absorption properties of materials.
University officials said the facility will be accessible not only to MSU researchers but also to students, scientists and scholars from other institutions, as well as startups and industries. The centre will operate on a fee-based model, with concessional rates likely for university researchers and separate charges for external users.
Designed as a self-sustaining facility, the centre will generate revenue through user fees to cover maintenance and operational costs. Sources said that once government funds are released and the necessary approvals are issued, procurement and installation of the equipment are expected to be completed within six months.
Officials believe the centre, among the most advanced of its kind in Gujarat, will significantly strengthen the state’s research ecosystem and foster greater collaboration between academia, industry and innovation-driven enterprises.
