Ahmedabad has identified 33 accident-prone blackspots across the city as authorities seek to address the growing number of fatal road crashes. Overspeeding, mobile phone use while driving, wrong-side driving and infrastructure deficiencies have been cited as some of the key reasons behind the rising accident rate.
According to an audit conducted by the Gujarat Road Safety Authority, several locations in Ahmedabad have recorded a high number of fatal accidents since 2021. Naroda Patiya emerged as the most dangerous stretch in the city, reporting 20 accidents that claimed 14 lives.
The audit highlighted recurring safety concerns at locations such as Shantipura Crossroads, Naroda Patiya, Iskcon Road and Juna Vadaj Circle. Officials observed that many of these areas have narrow road stretches where pedestrians and heavy vehicles share limited space, increasing the risk of accidents.
Road safety experts also flagged infrastructure-related issues. At Rabari Colony Crossroads, the absence of reflective sheets on Metro pillars has reportedly increased accident risks, particularly during poor visibility conditions. Experts have recommended better reflective markings near zebra crossings, stop lines and other critical traffic points to improve road safety.
Vakil Saheb Bridge in Bopal has also witnessed a rise in accidents, with 14 serious crashes reported at the location. Among the major blackspots identified, Odhav Ring Road BRTS Stand recorded 30 accidents and 13 fatalities, while Juna Vadaj Circle saw 15 accidents resulting in 11 deaths.
Other accident-prone locations include YMCA Club, Pakwan Junction, Naroda Patiya and Thakkarbapanagar Approach.
