SYSTRA, a leading international engineering and mobility consulting firm, has been appointed to provide Detailed Design Consultancy (DDC) services for two major expansion projects under the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Phase 2 network.
The contract, awarded by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (GMRCL), covers the design of the proposed Airport Metro Link and the extension of metro services to GIFT City, both of which are expected to significantly enhance connectivity across the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar region.
The first project, known as Phase-2A, involves a 5.11-km elevated metro corridor linking Koteshwar Road with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The corridor will include four stations and is aimed at providing seamless and efficient metro access to one of Gujarat’s busiest transport hubs.
The second project, Phase-2B, comprises a 3.3-km elevated extension with three stations that will strengthen connectivity to GIFT City, India’s flagship international financial and technology hub. The expansion is expected to improve access for employees, residents and visitors travelling to the rapidly developing smart city.
SYSTRA said the latest assignment builds on its previous involvement in Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 2 development and reflects its continued partnership with GMRCL in expanding the region’s urban transit infrastructure.
The appointment comes shortly after the Union Cabinet approved the Airport Link corridor connecting Koteshwar Road and Ahmedabad airport. The GIFT City extension project, which envisages extending metro connectivity from GIFT City towards Shahpur, had received Cabinet approval earlier this year.
Officials believe the new metro corridors will improve last-mile connectivity, reduce travel time and encourage greater use of public transportation, while supporting economic growth in key commercial and business districts across Gujarat.
With the design consultancy now in place, the projects are expected to move into the next phase of planning and execution in the coming months.
