US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States and Iran have reached an agreement that will reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the US naval blockade, describing it as a major breakthrough after months of tensions and conflict.
In a post on social media, Trump declared that the deal with Iran was “now complete” and said he had authorised the immediate reopening of the strategically important waterway as well as the removal of the US naval blockade. He added that the move would allow global shipping and oil supplies to resume normal operations.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, has been at the centre of months of regional tensions, with disruptions affecting global energy markets and raising concerns about oil supplies.
Trump described the agreement as a significant step towards peace and stability in the Middle East and said it would help restore security across the region. He also claimed that previous US administrations had failed to achieve a similar breakthrough with Iran.
According to Trump, the agreement is expected to be formally signed later this week in Switzerland. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz will reportedly coincide with efforts to clear mines and ensure safe navigation for commercial vessels.
While Trump announced the deal as complete, the White House has not yet released the full text of the agreement. Reports suggest the initial arrangement focuses on ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring freedom of navigation, while more complex issues such as Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief will be discussed in future negotiations.
