Passengers travelling through Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport have complained that luggage weighing machines used by some airlines are showing higher weights than expected, forcing them to either pay extra baggage charges or remove items from their bags before boarding.
According to passengers, their luggage is often weighed at home before leaving for the airport, but the airline scales at the airport reportedly show the bags to be 200 to 300 grams heavier. Because of this difference, some travellers say they have had to throw away belongings or pay additional fees for excess baggage.
The issue was officially reported to the Legal Metrology Department on December 29, 2025. Passengers submitted a written complaint along with photographs as evidence. However, they claim that officials did not carry out a detailed inspection of the baggage weighing machines.
Complainants also allege that an inspection conducted on February 4, 2026, was incomplete and took place without representatives from the Consumer Protection Board.
Consumer groups say authorities focused on other violations at the airport and fined three food and beverage outlets a total of Rs 40,000 under legal metrology rules, but did not properly investigate the accuracy of the luggage scales.
They further claim that the airport did not have certified government standard weights that are required to test whether weighing machines are accurate. They also allege that mandatory verification certificates for the scales were not displayed clearly.
Consumer rights groups have now demanded a complete inspection of all baggage weighing systems at the airport to ensure passengers are not unfairly charged because of incorrect weight readings.
