Technology major Meta has announced plans to lease its first artificial intelligence (AI)-ready data centre in India from Reliance Industries, marking a major step in expanding its digital infrastructure in one of its fastest-growing markets.
As part of the agreement, Reliance will develop a dedicated data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with an initial capacity of 168 megawatts (MW). Meta will lease the facility and will have the flexibility to increase capacity in the future to meet growing AI computing requirements.
Meta said the investment reflects its long-term commitment to India and aims to bring advanced AI infrastructure closer to the businesses and users that depend on its platforms and services.
Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani described the partnership as a milestone for India’s digital ecosystem.
“This partnership with Meta marks a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure. Building India’s first built-to-suit data centre for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to lead in the global AI revolution,” Ambani said. He added that Jamnagar is set to emerge as a major hub for hyperscale AI computing, supported by world-class infrastructure.
Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company was proud to collaborate with Reliance on its first AI-enabled data centre in India.
“This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us expand our AI infrastructure globally while reinforcing our long-term investment in India’s economy,” Zuckerberg said.
The company noted that the Jamnagar facility will play a key role in supporting its growing AI ambitions and will further strengthen its existing partnership with Reliance across connectivity, commerce and technology initiatives.
Reliance is currently developing one of the world’s largest data centre campuses in Jamnagar, leveraging the region’s robust infrastructure, energy resources and strategic location. According to the company, Gujarat offers several advantages for large-scale data centre operations, including renewable energy availability, water resources, proximity to western submarine cable landing stations and access to Jio’s extensive fibre network.
Meta also said the facility will operate on renewable energy. The company is separately working with clean energy partners to support nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy capacity in India.
The announcement comes amid a global surge in investments in AI infrastructure, with India rapidly emerging as a key destination for data centres, cloud computing services and artificial intelligence development.
