Gujarat, often projected as a safe state for women, has come under scrutiny after official crime data revealed that 331 cases of molestation and sexual harassment were registered across the state in 2024. The figures indicate that nearly one woman or girl reported being a victim of such offences every day, sparking concerns about safety in public spaces, workplaces and transport systems.
According to official records, a total of 331 molestation and sexual harassment cases were reported during the year. The data suggests that minors accounted for a significant share of the victims, highlighting the vulnerability of children and adolescents to such crimes.
Workplaces have also emerged as areas of concern. Records show that seven cases of sexual harassment were reported from offices in 2024, despite increasing awareness campaigns and legal provisions aimed at protecting women employees.
Additionally, 43 cases were registered from commercial establishments and work-related environments, including malls, factories and other workplaces frequented by women for employment and daily activities.
The safety of women using public transport continues to be a concern as well. Social activists point out that incidents of harassment in buses, trains and other public transport systems are still being reported, underscoring the need for stronger surveillance and stricter enforcement measures.
Child rights advocates have expressed concern over the number of cases involving girls below the age of 18. They stress the importance of greater awareness, preventive initiatives and swift legal action against offenders to protect minors.
Law enforcement agencies maintain that complaints are acted upon in accordance with the law and that several initiatives aimed at improving women’s safety are being implemented across the state.
